Not too long ago, people adorned their ears with just one earring per earlobe. However, piercing date back to nearly 5000 years ago, with many types of piercings apart from ears were quite common in several cultures. In many ancient African cultures, people would common pierce their lips and tongues, while in India, nose piercings were and still are quite commonplace.

The 1970’s saw a resurgence of piercings when hippies from the United States came back after spending time in India and brought back the old tradition with them. Then, the rise of punk culture brought septum piercings and other more, then typically considered avant-garde, piercings such as septum.

Nowadays, piercings are mostly accepted without question, especially when it comes to celebrities. The latest trend isn’t one that is scandalous, but rather is a more subtle form of self expression. In fact, this trend isn’t even new, but is just seeing a rise in popularity once again.

Celebs on the red carpet have been embracing what some are calling the “curated ear” or what New York City piercing studio Studs is calling the “constellation piercings” trend. Studs defines this as the “combined art and science of decorating your ear,” so you know they’re not messing around. At the 2020 SAG Awards, celebs truly embraced this new trend. Here’s a look at how they pulled it off.

Zoe Kravitz mixed together a medium pearl stud with several tiny gold studs throughout the rest of her lobe and finished the look off with adorning her tragus with a small gold hoop.
