While many people consider getting married a rite of passage in life, there are a lot of people who don’t feel that they need to tie the knot at all. These celebrities have not said “I do” for various reasons. Let’s find out why…

Sarah Silverman has strong feelings against the idea of marriage. She has said that it is “gross and crazy” and is simply not interested. She was in high profile relationships with Jimmy Kimmel and Michael Sheen, but is currently single.

Vanessa Paradis

Vanessa Paradis was loved up with none other than Johnny Depp for over ten years. However, the two never actually got married, but they did have kids together. Paradis explained the situation in 2004: “We’ve never said we don’t want to get married, but we’re neither opposed to it nor excited about it. You know, we might do it for the kids one day. But we are more than married: we have two children. It’s not like we need to.”

Jacqueline Bisset

Although Jacqueline Bisset has never married, she has still been in several long-term relationships, some of which certainly have outlasted many actual marriages, especially celebrity marriages. She has had three relationships that lasted 7 years and one that’s lasted 14 years! It’s safe to say that she is a serial monogamist.

Kimberly Stewart

It was reported in 2011 that Kimberly Stewart, Rod Stewart’s daughter, had a baby with actor Benicio del Toro, despite the fact that they were not even in a relationship at the time. She was also engaged to reality star Talan Torriero when she was 26, but the two called off the engagement just two weeks later.

Robin Roberts

Broadcaster Robin Roberts has been in a relationship with partner Amber Laign, who is a massage therapist, for well over a decade. However, the two have chosen to not get married or even cohabitate, each living in her own residence.

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney Kardashian is the eldest of the Kardashian sisters who had a tumultuous on and off relationship with Scott Disick for over ten years. The two share three children who they co-parent, despite the fact that they are no longer together and have both moved on to new relationships.

Edie Falco

Edie Falco, who is best known for her role as Carmela Soprano on the hit HBO show The Sopranos, never married in real life. On the matter she has said: “in my life, in general, I don’t see a lot of marriages that look appealing to me.” She adopted two daughters as she never felt that it was necessary to have a husband in order to have a family.

Allison Janney

Allison Janney has never been married but don’t you dare feel sorry for her! She has embraced the bachelor lifestyle, saying:  “I want to be a player! I’m still single! I want to feel sexy and young and pretty for as long as I can.” We love her attitude.

Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes is the creator of several hit television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. She has opted to never get married, as she feels that otherwise she “could not have the life that she created for herself.” She does have three children, however.

Kristin Davis

Although Kristin Davis’ on-screen Sex and the City character Charlotte York spent a majority of her time searching for the perfect husband, Davis never felt the same need. She has never married but has adopted a daughter named Gemma Rose. She has said that she doesn’t want to share her with anyone unless they are truly “someone so awesome.”

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks has had an incredible career, starting from Victoria’s Secret model, to worldwide supermodel, to acting, and producing and hosting hit reality show America’s Next Top Model. She has never been married, but she did have a son with her longtime partner Erik Asla. The two ended their relationship in 2017.

Joan Jett

Joan Jett has never publicly confirmed her personal preferences, but she has dated many well-known figures such as Chuck Zito, John Lyndon, Billy Idol, Dee Dee Ramone, Pleasant Gehman, Kira Roessler, and many more. She has never been married and never really plans to get married either.

Miranda Richardson

Actress and comedian Miranda Richardson has had quite the illustrious career. Although she has never married or had children, she is not opposed to the idea. She said: “I think marriage would be quite good for me, but I’m not going to just go out and hire someone. I think, intermittently, that you find Mr Right, but you have to get lucky. I don’t rule out having a family – it just hasn’t happened for me yet.”

Jorja Fox

Jorja Fox rose to prominence for her roles on massively popular shows like CSI, E.R., and The West Wing. She has dated both men and women and was most recently linked to Lelah Foster. They were in a relationship from 2004, but unfortunately broke up in 2017.

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts was famously linked to fellow actor Liev Schriber. While they were together, the two got engaged but had no plans of marrying. They had two children together. However, it seems as though Schriber was the one who was against the idea of marriage, as when the two ended their relationship, Watts stated that she was not against the idea of marriage.

Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter met director Tim Burton In 2001 when she starred in Planet of the Apes. The two were together over a decade and had two children together, Billy Raymond Burton and Nell Burton. In 2014, the two announced that they had “separated amicably.” Carter has since moved on to a relationship with author Rye Dag Holmboe.

Susan Boyle became a household name when she stunned judges on talent show Britain’s Got Talent with her incredible singing voice. She was 49 years old at the time, and admitted that she had never had a boyfriend before. In 2014, she reportedly began dating her first boyfriend. However, she is still unmarried as of now.

Swedish actress Greta Garbo was famous during the 1920’s and 30’s and has starred in iconic films such as Camille and Flesh and the Devil. The closest she ever came to marrying was to fellow actor John Gilbert, who at the last minute she left at the alter. She said: “I was in love with him. But I froze. I was afraid he would tell me what to do and boss me. I always wanted to be the boss.

Marisa Tomei first rose to fame when she starred on TV show A Different World and became a star after appearing in My Cousin Vinny. She was in a relationship with fellow actor Logan Marshall-Green from 2008 until 2012. On marriage and children, she has said: “I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings.”

Jennifer Westfeldt is known for her roles in films like Kissing Jessica Stein and Friends with Kids. She began dating actor Jon Hamm in 1997, but the two never married. On the relationship, Hamm said: “We may not have a piece of paper that says we’re husband and wife, but after 10 years, Jennifer is more than just a girlfriend. What we have is much deeper and we both know that. To me, people [should] get married when they’re ready to have kids, which I’m not ruling out.” In 2015, the couple announced that they were separating.

Mary-Louise Parker was linked to actor Billy Crudup from 1996 until 2003, when Crudup left her for Claire Danes while Parker was pregnant with their child. She later dated Jeffrey Dean Morgan and the pair were even engaged until they broke up in 2008. She adopted a daughter from Ethiopia in 2007.

The pair have been together ever since, and were engaged to be married in 1992, however, the wedding never happened, though they are still happily together. They do not have any children.

Coco Chanel was one of the world’s most famous fashion designers whose brand still dominates the industry today.  She was the mistress of French cavalry officer Etienne Balsan and later had an affair with his friend, Captain Arthur Edward Chapel. Coco never married and never had children, though she did take care of her sister’s son after her sister passed away.

Eva Mendes was in a relationship with George Augusto, who is a filmmaker, between 2002 and 2010. She later met Ryan Gosling while filming The Place Beyond The Pines in 2011. They have been together ever since, but have not married. They share two daughters, their eldest born in 2014 and second in 2016.

Owen Wilson and Sheryl Crow dated, and her song “Safe and Sound” is dedicated to him. In 2011, his then-girlfriend Jade Duell gave birth to their son. The two then ended their relationship, and he had a second son with Carolin Lindqvist. Kevin Spacey is best known for his roles in The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, and House of Cards. He was later accused of assault by actor Anthony Rapp and many others stepped forward with accusations. The actor has since mostly retreated from the public eye. He has never married.

Ricky Gervais has been with his partner, producer/author Jane Fallon, since 1982. The two have opted not to marry or have children, with Gervais saying: “there’s no point in us having an actual ceremony before the eyes of God because there is no God…[they] didn’t fancy dedicating 16 years of [their] lives […] and there are too many children, of course.”

John Cusack has been in numerous successful films like Say Anything…, Bullets Over Broadway, Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity, and Igor. He has never been married, and in a 2009 interview when asked about it, he said it’s because “society doesn’t tell me what to do.”

Comedian Gary Shandling had notoriously been quiet about his personal life throughout his career. He was engaged to actress and model Linda Doucett from between 1987 and 1994. However, Gary Shandling was never been married and had no children.

Actor and comedian Jeremy Piven is perhaps best known for his role as Ari Gold on the HBO hit show Entourage. He also had a role on Ellen, the sitcom which launched Ellen DeGeneres’s fame. Piven has never been married and does not have any children.

Actor and comedian Seth MacFarlane is best known for being the creator of comedy TV show Family Guy. He also created shows The Orville, American Dad!, and The Cleveland Show. He wrote and directed films Ted, Ted 2, and A Million Ways to Die in the West. He dated actress Emilia Clarke from 2012 until 2013. He has never been married and he doesn’t have any children.

Queen Latifah is a beloved actress and rapper. She has never been married and has no children. She has previously dated both men and women. Most recently, she was linked to personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins from 2002 through 2011. She previously dated Kendu Isaacs from 1992 until 2001.

Lauren Graham is best known for playing the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls.  She dated several actors like Tate Donovan, Marc Blucas, and Matthew Perry. She is currently dating actor Peter Krause. The pair met in 1995 but didn’t start dating until 2010.

On never marrying, she said: “I don’t think that because I’m not married it’s made my life any less. That old maid myth is garbage.” She also adopted two children on her own.

Speaking of Al Pacino, he has also never married. He has three children, one with acting coach Jan Tarrant, and twins with actress Beverly D’Angelo. He was in a decade-long relationship with actress Lucila Polak, whose daughter, Camila Morrone, considers Pacino to be her stepfather.

Model and spokesperson Fabio Lanzoni was in a relationship with Kristine Mejia in 1994. Beginning in 2001, he was relationship with model Larissa Meek, but they have since broken up. Meek later appeared in reality TV dating show Average Joe: Hawaii.
