The Fixer Uppers
The couple known for creating other couples’ home of their dreams have the most romantic story themselves. After growing up in the same state and attending the same college, they actually only met after they both had graduated. Chip was at Joanna’s father’s store when he saw her picture. He knew right then and there that she was the one. The couple married in 2003.
A Small Farmhouse
Chip and Joanna bought a tiny farmhouse in 2012. It was a two-bedroom home with an attic. Of course, the house was far too small for the then-family of six. Of course, they’re the perfect couple to buy a fixer upper. Best of all, the house sat on an incredible space of land.
Long-Term Project
The Gaines couple had no idea that the house would take about 18 months from start to finish. While fixing the home, they stumbled upon many hidden gems, including paperwork that dated back all the way to 1895. They had no idea exactly how old the house was, but Joanna loved that it had its own unique story.
Finally Ready
In October 2013, their perfect farmhouse was finally ready and the family moved right in. Joanna’s goal was to keep the home’s original character as much as possible while still renovating it to be a modern house. Only one add-on structure was built onto the home.
Neutral Colors
The couple decided on a neutral color scheme for their home, with white featured prominently in the home’s exterior, which was kept in a traditional style. Adding to the picturesque home are the oak trees that make the house feel classic and natural at the same time.
Come On In
Just like the exterior, the home’s interior has a neutral color scheme. The front entrance features impressive double doors that open right into a spacious entry hall that has splashes of grey and white. The decor features modern industrial hardware that balance out the natural color scheme and wood.
Flow Of Space
To create a natural flow of space, the couple decided to known down some walls in order to create an open, welcoming space. In the open-concept kitchen, they chose white tiling and added black accent fittings and fixtures for a contrast. It also features a breakfast bar.
Diner And Lounge
Across from the kitchen island there is a lounge along with a diner. The open kitchen space has several nooks for different purposes, which helps the kitchen be a focal point of the home. The large dining table has enough space for the large family while still providing a cozy feel.
A Space For Relaxing
The lounge area features cozy furniture that has the signature Gaines look: neutral colors with warm wood features and modern farmhouse accents tying everything together. The lounge combines style and comfort to create a perfect space for relaxing.
Finishing Touches
All of the finishing touches in the home truly reflect the couple’s signature style. From vases to lamps, all of these beautiful items add a special touch to their home. Many similar products can be found at the Magnolia Market, the couples’ shop that offers furniture and home decor both in person and online.
The Master Bedroom
While the majority of the house included a renovation of the old house, the added extension included the couples’ master bedroom. The vintage doors were used to keep the classic look and original flooring was added to keep things modern. Of course, the gorgeous bed is the main attraction of the luxurious bedroom.
Ultimate Relaxation
With multiple TV shows, businesses, and children, Chip and Joanna are constantly busy. That’s why it makes perfect sense that they have the coziest relaxation spot right in their bedroom. The fireplace is perfect especially for cold and dreary winter nights.
Ensuite Bathroom
Another fantastic feature of the master bedroom is the ensuite bathroom. It features an elegant free standing tub and classic wooden doors, which are a motif throughout the whole house. The black lanterns add another special touch to the unique bedroom.
Bathroom’s Interior
Inside the bathroom, there are his and hers sinks and in addition to the luxurious bathtub there’s a beautiful chandelier that truly elevates the room. Just as with the rest of the home, Chip and Joanna chose to keep a neutral color palette in the bathroom as well.
Their Girls’ Room
Chip and Joanna have two daughters named Emmie Kay and Ella who share a room. The parents made sure that their daughters would have the perfect room and yet they still did not sacrifice the overall style of the house. The minimalistic room features perfect accent touches like the adorable dollhouse and beautiful chandelier.
Their Boys’ Room
Chip and Joanna have three sons, with their newest addition Crew being born in June 2018. Before he joined the family, the older two boys Drake and Duke moved into their room that features amazing modern bunk beds and plenty of space for playing.
Adventure Room
The boys have plenty of room to stay busy and play in their room and even features fun ladders to climb. Still in the boys’ room we can see the neutral color scheme with metallic accents and wooden floors. The room has almost a nautical feel to it.
Family Ties
It is clear that everything that Chip and Joanna do is for their family, and there are plenty of signs all around the house that this is the case. Here we can see a gorgeous wall of family portraits, all in black and white, that accent the staircase’s wall.
Coffee Corner
Since they have a lot of space in their home, Joanna and Chip were able to add fun quirks to their home, like this amazing coffee bar. Here the couple can display their love for coffee and provide another fun space to spend time with one another.
Crafting Space
It’s not hard to believe that such creative people like Chip and Joanna are encouraging their kids to explore their creativity as well. That’s why they included this lovely craft space in their attic. The space is minimalistic, which is perfect for getting in the right headspace for creating crafts.
Her Own Craft Space
In addition to the kids’ crafting room, Joanna built her very own craft space as well. It’s a perfect hideout for her to brainstorm new ideas for her many projects. She creates many decor items for Magnolia Market, so it’s safe to assume she uses this area quite often to get some ideas.
Outdoor Area
In the outside area of the farmhouse, we can see a lovely space where the Gaines entertain guests and spend time outdoors together. There’s nothing like spending some quality family time out there next to the fire pit and repurposed barn.
Farm Life
Living on a farm has plenty of perks, for example the expansive 40 acres surrounding their home. The couple has planted trees and many other plants to keep the area green and lively. They have totally transformed the old farmhouse and breathed new life into it. They were able to keep the traditional farmhouse look but incorporated updates to make it modern.
The Greenhouse
Out on the grounds, there’s also a greenhouse where the family grows all sorts of vegetation and plants. It’s a great opportunity for the parents to teach their kids about growing vegetables and keeping a garden.
Relaxing Porch
What would a farmhouse be without a wraparound porch? The Gaines family can spend quality time with one another, as we see Joanna here with baby crew. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy some time outdoors.
Inspiring
Joanna added a special touch to the home by including inspirational quotes as artwork all around the walls. Each of the sayings is thoughtful and embodies the couples’ outlook on life.
Plenty Of Space
It’s very clear by the way they chose to renovate their home that family is a top priority for Chip and Joanna. That’s why they included plenty of space for their kids to sit together, lounge, relax, and create. Just look at that massive Christmas tree!
Working From Home
We’ve all been spending a lot more time indoors and even working from home more often. Chip and Joanna thought about this in advance and created plenty of areas to work comfortably while at home. Their home is both functional and comfortable.
A Warm Hearth
Of course, Texas tends to get very hot in the summer, but it can get quite chilly in the winter as well. That’s why they added this lovely fireplace that creates a cozy space to sit and get warm during those colder nights. There’s no better way to kick back and relax during the winter.
A Perfect Garden
In addition to the greenhouse, Joanna has her own personal garden growing outside on the grounds as well. Here she grows herbs and vegetables within the enclosed space.
A Modern Farmhouse Kitchen
The kitchen at the Gaines’ home is the exact definition of a modern farmhouse kitchen. It is a pleasant space to hang out in but also has everything needed for a comfortable and functional kitchen. The classic Gaines whimsy can be seen with the “super market” sign hanging above the window.
Everything In Its Spot
It’s very clear that much thought and planning went into the design of Chip and Joanna’s home. There is absolutely nothing in the farmhouse that is out of place. This helps teach their kids the importance of keeping everything organized and tidy.
Lots Of Room For Playing
Of course, one of the best features of the Gaines home is that there is plenty of space for their kids to be kids. They too are creative and find lots of fun ways to play, even on the staircase! The parents encourage their kids to play and learn through play.
Reading Nooks
One of the best features of the home is the fact that each nook and cranny has a designated usage. Here we can see one of their children enjoying a book in a cozy corner. Adding some throw pillows and the knitted blanket are the perfect touch that helps you fully relax.
Before And After
Seeing photos of the farmhouse before Chip and Joanna’s renovation directly next to the modern house is simply breathtaking. The couple managed to breathe new life into the old house and they proved that with careful planning, designing, and hard work, incredible things can happen. The lengthy process of renovation was certainly worth it.
The Gaines Family
By transforming the old house, Chip and Joanna have created a beautiful and spacious home for their family to grow and create memories together. It’s perfectly comfortable for their large family and has a unique style that can be seen throughout. What they’ve accomplished is truly incredible.
Would They Sell?
The fact that their family seems to keep expanding made people wonder whether they would ever consider selling the farmhouse in order to have more space. However, they have confirmed that they have no plans of selling their home and that they are looking forward to their children growing up in the space that they created together.
Family Bond
Chip and Joanna have been together for over 15 years, and it seems like they’ve never been happier. On their 16th wedding anniversary, Joanna shared a post on Instagram with a caption that read: “16 years and it feels like we’re just getting started.” How adorable!
Her Parents
Joanna is quite close with her parents and has even shared their story on her Instagram. She shared: “My parents met in 1969 when my dad was stationed in Korea and their story is one you hear about in the movies. All the odds were against them but they fought through and became an example of how to love, fight for, extend grace to, and honor each other amidst all their many differences.”
The Growing Family
Chip and Joanna have four young kids and a brand new baby. Their kids Drake, Ella Rose, Duke, and Emmie Kay have a new baby brother who joined them in June 2018.
