A Sweet Start
In an interview with Ellen Degeneres in 2013, Kidman shared that she told her husband: “I’m like, ‘You didn’t love me at first sight, you didn’t notice me,’ and he’s like, ‘Yes I did, but I just didn’t let on.” But we kind of met, and then he phoned me four months later.”
A Budding Romance
That phone call went very well, and they quickly got together. They were engaged in spring 2006, which was just months of them dating. While some people believe that getting married quickly is a bad idea, Kidman does not agree.
Natural Process
In an interview with Ellen in 2014, Kidman shared: “I sort of enjoy being married and then getting to know each other,” she said. I know that seems weird, but to me, it’s a more natural process.” So did they make the right decision?
A Private Affair
Urban and Kidman’s wedding took place in their native Australia on June 25th, 2006 at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel at the St Patrick’s Estate in Manly, Sydney. Their guest list included famous faces like Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, and Naomi Watts.
Hard Times
Just a few months after their wedding, in October 2006, Urban chose to check into the Betty Ford Center in California after facing some personal struggles. He said in a statement: “I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones who love and support me. One can never let one’s guard down on recovery, and I’m afraid that I have.”
Being Supportive
Kidman decided to come home from a promotional tour in order to help and support her new husband. Urban later said that he had a tough time overcoming his demons. In a 2007 People magazine interview, he said: “I was going to lose it all.”
Digging Deep
He continued to say: “You may choose life, or you can pick the other way. It’s not about all the nitty-gritty details in between. It’s either life or death.” He also acknowledged how difficult it was on Nicole, saying “It was very, very terrible to have to have her go through that.”
Happy News
In January 2008, the couple shared some happier news via their publicist: they had their first child together! The statement said that “the couple are thrilled and cannot wait.” Their daughter Sunday Rose Kidman Urban was born in Nashville, Tennessee.
Overjoyed
Urban shared on his website: “Earlier this morning Nic gave birth to our beautiful baby girl, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban. We want to thank everybody that has kept us in their thoughts and prayers. We feel very, very blessed and grateful that we can share this joy with all of my loving fans today.”
More Happy News
Two years later, the couple had their second daughter named Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, who was born via gestational surrogacy at Nashville’s Centennial Women’s Hospital. Kidman hinted that this might not be their last. In a 2014 Elle interview, she said: “My grandma died at the age of 49.” Every month, I think to myself, ‘I hope I’m pregnant!’”
A Rumor That Shook Everyone
Despite the fact that the two have endured so many highs and lows in their relationship, that didn’t stop people from questioning the status of their marriage. Rumors began to swirl after Kidman kissed her Big Little Lies co-star Alexander Skarsgård at the Emmy Awards in 2017.
What Was Going On?
Many people began to wonder if this was an indication that something was amiss in her marriage. What was going through Urban’s mind when this kiss took place? Was it an innocent thing, or did it mean something more?
Addressing The Kiss
During an interview with The Graham Norton Show, Kidman finally addressed all of the whispers. She said: “I have a wonderful, supporting, beautiful spouse who I adore more than anything in the world…And I kissed Alex on the cheek, and he looks like a mannequin.”
Renewing Vows
Kidman and Urban decided to make a bold move and chose to renew their marital vows. According to a source that spoke with Us Weekly, the couple decided to say their “I do’s” for a second time.
For Both Of Them
Kidman and Urban decided that this was important for the both of them. The source said he “has realized that he can’t live without Nicole and has asked her to reaffirm their vows.” So what does Nicole think? She has said that she “thinks it’s a fantastic idea.”
A Small Ordeal
According to the insider, the pair decided to have an intimate gathering and that they “want to make their big day as quiet as possible, so only their closest relatives and friends will be invited. It will be extremely low-key and quite romantic.”
A Beach Destination
The sources claim that the two have set their sights on the location for their renewals. The source claimed: “They’re planning a small beach ceremony for this winter in Hawaii, where Nicole was born.”
A Powerful Message
This decision has solidified their devotion to one another, silencing the years of chatter and speculation about their marriage that could finally end the tabloid conjecture. They wanted to start a new chapter and felt that this was the right way to move forward.
Supporting Each Other
Kidman shared her thoughts with Vanity Fair in 2007, saying: “I believe we were two lonely individuals. I’d say that two extremely lonely individuals happened to meet at a moment when they could open out to each other. We were terrified and courageous at the same time.”
Thinking Back
Perhaps Urban was right all along when he said this in a 2007 People interview: “She stated she wanted to be bold with me early on. I believe something else was at work, bringing us together and then simply watching over us.”
His Early Struggles
Urban might have been thinking about the days before he knew Kidman as well. Early on in his career when he was living in Nashville, he struggled with drug abuse.
His First Rehab Stint
In 1998, he reached his breaking point and he made the decision that he would quit using altogether. He chose to check into Cumberland Heights, a treatment facility located in Nashville.
Second Time Around
Luckily, when he had to head to rehab for a second time in his life, Urban had his loving and supportive wife Kidman by his side. Going through addiction is never easy, but it’s always better to have a support system during these tough times.
Not Her First Marriage
While this is Urban’s first and only marriage, Kidman was married once before she met Urban. In fact, her first marriage was quite a high profile one, as she was married to none other than Tom Cruise.
Met On Set
Kidman and Cruise met in 1989 when they were working on the Days of Thunder film. They two fell in love and quickly knew that they wanted to tie the knot and make it official.
Getting Hitched
On Christmas Ever 1990, Kidman and Cruise were married. The couple went on to star in several more films together, including Far and Away and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Their Kids
While Kidman and Cruise were married, they adopted two children together: a daughter named Isabella Jane Cruise, who was born in 1992, and a son named Connor Anthony Cruise, born in 1995.
It Didn’t Last
In February 2001, Kidman and Cruise’s spokesperson shared the news that the two decided to separate. Cruise filed for divorce two days after the announcement. Later that year, their marriage was officially dissolved, citing irreconcilable differences.
Her Thoughts
In a June 2006 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, Kidman said that she still had love for him even though they were divorced. She said: “He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me and I loved him. I still love him.”
Why The Divorce?
Kidman also reportedly said she was shocked about their divorce. Mark Rathbun, a former Scientology executive shared in a documentary film that he was told to “facilitate [Cruise’s] break-up with Nicole Kidman.” Cruise’s auditor even claimed that Cruise had Kidman wiretapped.
Reluctant To Mention
As Kidman was raised Catholic and is still a practicing Catholic, even saying that the Catholic Church were part of her “essence.” Since she got divorced from Cruise, she has been cautious and reluctant to mention Scientology at all in interviews.
More False Rumors
It was also reported that Kidman experienced a miscarriage during her marriage to Cruise, while it was actually an ectopic pregnancy. She corrected this in a 2007 interview with Marie Claire, saying: “It was wrongly reported as miscarriage by everyone who picked up the story. So it’s huge news, and it didn’t happen.”
Before Cruise
Before she was married to Tom Cruise, Kidman was linked to Australian actor Marcus Graham as well as actor Tom Burlinson. She was also linked to Lenny Kravitz in 2003, and the two even got secretly engaged. They eventually ended their engagement.
Another Rumor
While filming Cold Mountain, there were rumors that Kidman was engaging in an affair with her co-star Jude Law and that it resulted in the breakdown of his marriage. Both vehemently denied the rumor, and Kidman even won an undisclosed sum of money from British tabloids that published the rumor.
The Good Life
After all these ups and downs in the Hollywood dating world, we’re sure that Kidman is thrilled with her marriage to Urban. The two seem to have a special bond, and they have built a lovely family and life together.
Their Homes
Urban and Kidman own a few homes together, one in Nashville, Tennessee, in Beverly Hills, California, two apartments in Sydney, Australia, a farmhouse in Sutton Forest, Australia, and an apartment in Manhattan. Not too shabby!
On Her Divorce
During an interview for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos, Kidman reflected on marriage and divorce. She said: “You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”
Current Relationship
After being questioned about her fame, she went on to say: “Why are you so interested in the famous thing? I don’t live that life. I’m deeply embedded in a family, in a very deep marriage. I’m parenting children. I’m a daughter. Those are the primary things. And yes, I have other things that circulate. But at my base are relationships that are very, to use your word, ‘real’.”
Dedicated Mother
Shortly after the birth of her first child with Urban, Kidman decided to take some time and retire from acting in order to spend some time raising her daughter.
Getting Back To Work
However, she came out of retirement after her mom spoke to her about it. Kidman said: “Until my mum said to me, ‘I don’t think you should just give up,’” she said. “I was quite convinced I could grow vegetables and be at home and be very satisfied with that, but was pushed quite substantially by my mum. Friends, too — I have friendships that have permeated my life.”
